Revisiting the Past

By Kat Knuth, Family Photographer Extraordinaire

Revisiting the past can be risky, BUT it can be really fun to see how far you’ve progressed in your art. I love the tik-toks showing people’s art as they’ve kept improving year after year. Practice may not make perfect, (because who the heck knows what that is anyway!) but it certainly can yield massive improvement!

Just depends on what you’re looking for and where you want to go!

So, I looked at a family photography session from about two years ago. I had put out a model call and this adorable young family answered my ad:

Best Longmont Family Photographer
The sweetest trio!

My editing style has changed so much since then, so I decided to apply new techniques to the original raw images.

And fell in love all over again:

Best Longmont Family Photographer
That golden glow!
Best Longmont Family Photographer
Giggles and play time.

It was interesting to see which photos popped out as my favorites this time. They were definitely different! Some were the same, but the different ones were more intriguing. Why didn’t they capture my interest the first time around?

I can’t necessarily answer that, but it’s fun to think about.

Some things, like how you develop your photographic eye, changes in subtler ways. For me, going through my original images, I was drawn to different things than when I first delivered this gallery. It changed how I culled, what I chose to edit, and, ultimately, how my gallery would have been presented.

Once I finished revisiting this session from my past, I even updated my portfolio to include some of these new images. It was so exciting to see my editing growth and to find what I was still proud of.

Have you ever done something like this? What did you learn about yourself?

The Rabbit Hole – Shopping for Baby Clothes

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Baby Photographer

Rabbit holes are my absolute favorite way to waste time. Particularly, the kind that take place while shopping online. My daughter is about six months old and I am just dying for her to learn how to sit. She’s pretty good when sitting in a chair:

Best Longmont Baby Photographer
I just love frilly baby dresses. – Longmont, CO

But I have this fantasy of setting her in some emerald grass at golden hour this summer and taking snap after gorgeous snap of her in something fabulously boho or vintage. I have a weakness for mauve pinks, lace, soft creams, and delicate greens.

So, I end up on Etsy. And Amazon.

But my darling hasn’t even master the tripod sit yet! Haha!

Best Longmont Baby Photographer
Too curious about her sandals that she’s basically folded in half! – Longmont, CO

See? She’s practically folding in on herself. But she’s so, so strong and learning so much every single day. All I can do is sigh and wait.

And shop too much. And add too many things to wish lists. Haha!

But, I’m grateful for how well she photographed in her crib, too. Remember Tuesday’s post about the faux fur outfit? Perfection. Adorable, pink, fluffy, perfection.

Can’t go wrong with this little model, nor the rabbit holes shopping for her takes me down! I’m sure after she learns to sit, I’ll be itching for her to learn how to stand. Have to remember to enjoy the moment, right? She’ll never be this little again!

The Faux Fur Dress – Baby Outfit Extraordinaire

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Baby Photographer

Choosing the perfect baby outfit for photos can be a challenge. I prepared a style guide for my clients to help them through this all-important task as they prep for their sessions. I have them for each of my specialties: Family, Newborn, and Mini!

Fun fact: My spring mini’s are open and booking! Email my at katknuthphotography@gmail.com or call (602) 741-8483 to reserve your spot!

But sometimes, the baby outfit chooses you. Or…chooses your baby? Haha!

In this case, my mom selected something neither of us could resist:

Best Longmont Baby Photographer
All smiles

Now, this little number didn’t come with the bow, but because I am an absolute baby bow hoarder, I had it on hand and it went just PERFECTLY. But the ballerina dress and coordinating faux fur coat were irresistible (wait for it)!

I love the color. That lovely rose pink and the soft silver glitter inlaid in the skirt. The too fancy gold lace around her waist. The simple bodice. In her crib, her happy place, my darling girl just giggled and smiled up a storm! Perfect for her all-too-excited photographer momma!

The whole dress.

So, I have no idea how my two month old darling learned how to sassily pose like that, but I’m not disappointed! Haha! I love when you can see a baby’s future personality come alive in little gestures like this. It’s so much fun to watch them grow and develop into tiny humans!

Anyway, to finish the shoot, I added the effervescent faux fur coat:

Best Longmont Baby Photographer
So. Freaking. ADORABLE.

I just can’t. HOW PRECIOUS IS THAT?! I took way too many pictures of this outfit and stashed it in a keepsake box for her when she grows up. Sometimes, grandma really knows best.

A Little Personal – Capturing My Kids

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Baby Photographer

It’s interesting, as a photographer momma, how I choose to photograph my own kids. It’s a personal choice, of course. I do practice on them pretty much constantly, whether it’s taking pictures while they play or something a little more staged.

Sometimes, I like to just…meet them where they are. For example, my daughter is happiest in her crib. Around 2-3 months, most of our photoshoots took place there, just before naptime (she nurses to sleep and likes to cuddle for a while afterward). I learned how to light her crib by positioning the blinds in the window just so, depending on the natural light outside.

I started using these simple setups to capture her special or most adorable outfits. For example:

Best Longmont Baby Photographer
In a custom onesie

I loved the contrast for this photo. Her bedding, passed down from her brother, a dark blue background full of colorful dinosaurs. Her custom onesie, white with text. An absurdly poofy skirt, dusty purple and so much fun for her to play with while I worked. I debated putting a bow on her nearly hairless head but decided not to overwhelm her with all the addons. Besides, she’s a baby. She’s perfect just as she is.

Her sweet smile proves it.

The whole outfit – too cute!

I’ll share a few more shoots I did like this, where my daughter is her most relaxed and happy. Stay tuned!

Newborn Composites

By Kat Knuth, Top Longmont Newborn Photographer

One of the reasons I love newborn photography is because I love building sets. But if you don’t want to have a million props lying around or access to a studio, digital backgrounds and composites are the way to go!

In my previous post, I talked about compositing my daughter as a little mermaid. But this time, I went back and tried a couple things to composite some of my favorite newborn photography images.

First up:

Best Longmont Newborn Photographer
Pretty on a pedestal.

I’m definitely getting better! Except for parts of the skirt, this is one of my best composites. I love the simplicity, the delicate lace, and the wood floor. I think though, this is a prop I would truly just like to own! Haha!

I wonder where I could get something like that lovely droopy lace. Do you think it’s a curtain or table cloth repurposed for a photo like this? That’s my guess and probably where I’d start researching.

Next up:

Best Longmont Newborn Photographer
Nestled in a crate.

Another one of my better composites. But, again, I look at this and think, “well, I could just add a crate to my collection.” I could fill it with one of my dozens of newborn photography blankets. I could start collecting bouquets to accent it!

I think I’m just a newborn photography prop hoarder.

That’s okay. I’m not there yet. But doing photoshop exercises like this and learning new skills makes me want to be one!

For now, I’ll stick with my traveling studio and set up gorgeous sets in my client’s homes. This is more comfortable for my littlest Longmont newborn photography clients anyway. They can stay warm and cozy at home while I create meaningful art for their families.

I really love my job. *sigh*

I’m a recent addition to Longmont, Colorado, (I know, I know, don’t hate me! I married a native! It doesn’t count!) and my favorite season is, by far, spring. I love how the world begins to awaken, shaking off the long, bleak winter, and bursting forth with crabapple blossoms, tulips, and daffodils. I’ll buy so many daffodils for my home over the next few weeks, it’s bananas. They’re just so cheerful! Like little trumpets of joy, shouting that warmth and sunshine is coming!

Can you tell I’m mostly from the southwest? Winter is HARD for me. Haha!

The best way to celebrate this changing season? Why, with custom photography, of course!

This year, my minis are only $250 and INCLUDE 5 professionally edited digital images. I’ll give you more than that to choose from, of course, and you can purchase the entire album if you wish, but if you just want those 5 images, that’s okay by me!

Learning to Composite

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Newborn Photographer

If you go on Etsy and look through the photography backgrounds, you’ll eventually end up in the composite area. Compositing is a Photoshop technique that combines several image elements to create a final image. This can be as simple as inserting a baby into a set or as complicated as turning a child into a fairy riding a unicorn.

There’s a lot that goes into it. You need the background, of course. You’ll need an image to pull a subject from. The light should match or be easily matched. Maybe you’ll need extra digital props to tie it all together. Who knows? It all depends on what you’re trying to create.

For me, it was the little mermaid.

Like many 80’s/early 90’s babies, I worshipped at Ariel’s fins for most of my childhood. Turning my daughter into a version of a mermaid was the ultimate dream. I bought her a little knit mermaid outfit online and couldn’t wait to put her in it.

Best Longmont Newborn Photographer
Littlest mermaid on a boat <3

This composite was very simple and while definitely not perfect, I like that I was able to learn a new skill to create a new image of my sweet girl. Especially one so close to my heart! For this image, I bought a background on Etsy and took pictures of my daughter in her crib. I then used the lasso tool to cut her out (if you have a green screen background, this is a great time to use it!) and place her on the background. There’s some more to it than that, messing with tone, highlights, shadows, etc. But that’s the gist!

I tried again with this background:

Top Longmont Newborn Photographer
Heyo, Sebastian and friends!

Also, an imperfect but good attempt at a composite! Same techniques used for this one to create a fun, silly image!

As I continue to work on and improve this skill, I intend to focus more on babies, especially newborns! That way, I can offer digital sets to my clients as well as the traveling studio I bring with me to each shoot in Longmont, Colorado.

Happy Easter!

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Newborn Photographer

I just had to stop by today and wish you all a Happy Easter!! I love Easter, not because I’m particularly fond of chocolate eggs or bunnies, but because it is the holiday that means spring has sprung! (Or will do so shortly. Thanks, crazy Colorado weather!) Plus, I promised!

Anyway, keeping with my tradition of celebrating those precious baby first, I had to take a shot at an Easter baby portrait. I couldn’t decide how to do it. Normally, I go down an Instagram rabbit hole (pun absolutely intended). But there wasn’t a lot to be inspired by. Searching “Easter baby,” “Easter newborn,” “spring baby,” etc., nothing seemed to give me what I was looking for.

Guess I needed to create it myself!

I originally wanted to shoot these pictures outside but the gorgeous white lace caught the sunlight in the strangest way. My daughter seemed to be in a halo, and not in a fun angelic kind of way. In a strange, why is that baby glowing like a lightning bug, kind of way.

Not cute.

But by setting up a studio inside, controlling the light with a few well-placed soft boxes, I was able to get the cute pictures of my little bunny. True to my signature style, I even thought to grab the knit blanket her great-grandmother made for her.

It was so much fun to mix the studio style with the lifestyle elements that define my newborn photography client experience. Of course, I’ll save this outfit for my daughter so that maybe one day she’ll pass it down to hers. One day in the very, very distant future, HAHA!

Again, Happy Easter everyone! Hope you spend today surrounded by love.

Holiday(s) – A Bit of Newborn Photography Fun

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Newborn Photographer

Holiday milestones are so precious when welcoming a new baby to the family. Every first has to be documented and celebrated! My girl was born in the fall, so her first major holiday was Thanksgiving!

When thinking about what kind of picture I wanted to take to mark the occasion, I thought of my younger brother. My brother loves when people put their newborns in funny places, like inside pumpkins (did I ever mention that was his idea?). One of our favorite childhood playthings wasn’t a toy, it was a granite roaster. We used to sit in it together, me in the bottom part and him in the lid, and giggle at each other. He’d often mentioned, after the pumpkin pictures turned out so well, that I should stick my kiddos in a granite roaster for a Thanksgiving picture.

However, my son was just past 6 months old during his first Thanksgiving. I put him in a stock pot instead:

Best Longmont Newborn Photographer

But my daughter was still a very little turkey when her first Thanksgiving came along. I decided to try the hallowed granite roaster and prepared to stick my newborn daughter in it!

Coincidentally, my mother-in-law gave my a knit turkey outfit when my daughter was born. It was just the right look for this photo! I prepared it, the roaster, and some leftover dried corn from her pumpkin baby shoot. We were ready to pose her for some holiday fun!

To finish the set/look for this photo, I added some natural elements and added to her outfit. The autumn colors all naturally worked together. They even looked nice when positioned on a scarf I had just bought for myself! I love creatively using household items like that to create something magical.

With Easter coming in a few days, I’ve been racking my brain to see what I can do to take some new milestone pictures for another first holiday! Stay tuned for a special post this Sunday to see what I came up with!

Playful Outfits – Newborn Photography

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Newborn Photographer

For posed newborn photography, there seems to be several trends:

  • Baby posed asleep on a single color background, often wrapped in the same color, holding a small plush or wearing a simple headband. (Like This)
  • Baby posed in neutral tones, laying on a heavy cable knit blanket. (Like This)
  • Baby wearing a funny or too cute outfit, posed sleepily in a (sometimes) elaborate set. (Like This)

In the days before my daughter was born, my mom picked up an angel baby outfit from a local shop in Longmont, Colorado. She thought it was perfect to dress up my daughter in for some newborn photography pictures. One morning, I decided to test it out:

Best Longmont Newborn Photographer
Sleepy Angel

It worked out really well! The skirt was a bit too scratchy and my daughter didn’t care for it. It would wake her up as I was trying to pose her and who wants an annoyed angel baby in their newborn photography photos? I ended up laying it on top of her and tucking it behind her bum. The wings were difficult to pose too, but by folding them in half and tucking them behind her shoulders, I was able to get the look I wanted.

Another outfit I just had on hand was an impulse buy of my own. I was wandering around Once Upon a Child in Longmont, Colorado, and saw this adorable, brand-new baby unicorn outfit hanging on an endcap. I had to get it. My clients could probably get some use out of it, right? After the photos in the angel outfit, I thought I’d try it out on my sweet girl anyway.

I used a different blanket background for the unicorn outfit photos. These little rosettes seemed to add to the whimsical nature of the photos. I loved how the blanket and the outfit worked together to achieve that final, precious, newborn photography result.

Newborn Photoshoots – Mommy’s Wedding Veil

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Newborn Photographer

One of the sweetest, most beautiful newborn photoshoots I’ve even done was with my 6 week old daughter and my wedding veil. I went down this Instagram rabbit hole, as one does, and found the most beautiful pictures of baby daughters in their mother’s wedding veils. Having loved my own wedding veil and hoping to pass it down one very distant day, I thought this would be a perfect project for my daughter and I!

When I discovered this newborn photoshoot idea, my daughter was already 5, almost 6 weeks old. Definitely still a sleepy little chunk but no longer a newborn squish! I decided to go for it during a nap anyway, prepping her nursery the way I would for a newborn photoshoot:

  • Warm the room to 80 degrees (thank you space heater!)
  • Keep props and heirlooms nearby.
  • Relax. This could take some finagling to pull off!

This is what we created together:

Longmont Newborn Photographer - wedding veil
Lace and baby chub, what more could you need?

If you decide to go down your own Instagram rabbit hole full of newborn wedding veil newborn photos, note that these are usually done with an all-white background. I love that ethereal look but I wanted to put my own spin on things. I thought about some local high end newborn photography, thinking of all those beautiful black and white shots full of tiny details. Then it clicked, a black background would be a different take and give that high end, high contrast vibe.

The shoot itself definitely went very well. My sweet girl would stir when I positioned and repositioned the veil so I’d have to slow down and lull her back to sleep to keep going. She was as cooperative as a very sleepy newborn! It was actually a lovely experience.

Heirlooms in Family and Newborn Photography

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Family and Newborn Photographer

I know I’ve said this before, but heirlooms are my favorite props to use during a family or even newborn photoshoot. My Longmont family and newborn photography clients know and love to add this personal, sentimental, and sometimes quirky touch to their photos (see: Koala Baby).

So, I thought I’d share a couple of my favorite personal heirlooms I’ve been lucky enough to incorporate into my family’s photos!

First up:

Longmont Family Photographer - Heirlooms in Family and Newborn Photography
Handmade by my Father-in-law!

My sweet little guy was about 18 months old in this picture. I’d know for a long time that I wanted to do some kind of photoshoot with this lovely heirloom rocking horse, handmade by my father-in-law and passed down through cousins and my husband before making it to my son. It’s almost 40 years old! It not only just made sense to dress up my son as a cowboy (something his father loved to do as a little boy) but I’d done a previous cowboy shoot when my son was 9 months old that I loved. Recreating it as hew got older was long a goal of mine. He is just the perfect little Colorado cutie!

Gathering my equipment, the rocking horse, and my little cowboy, I set up shop in the courtyard outside my home. The autumn leaves were falling and were such wonderful colors. I thought it was just the perfect setup. As you can see from the pictures above and below, I was right. Haha!

Longmont Family Photographer - Heirlooms in Family and Newborn Photography

Not to be outdone, but when my daughter was born, my mom passed on a couple keepsakes she’d stowed away for me! She saved a knitted blanket from my great-grandmother and a yellow tunic she brought me home from the hospital in. I couldn’t wait to put them on/around my daughter for some precious newborn looks!

Longmont Family Photographer - Heirlooms in Family and Newborn Photography
All dressed up in heirloom love.

I love, love, love that I was able to memorialize these items in these precious family and newborn photos. The history, the stories, and the sentiment behind them – who could resist? Just something to think about as you plan your next Longmont family and newborn photography shoot!

Learning to Wrap a Newborn

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Newborn Photographer

One of the things I struggled with as a newborn photographer was learned how to wrap a newborn baby! I watched sooo many YouTube videos to try and learn but there’s just something different about doing it on an actual, squirmy wormy baby. I was grateful I was able to try out different techniques with each baby I’d worked with before my daughter was born.

For this sweet boy, I did a newborn wrap technique that focused on showcasing his darling little feet. I loved the cheese cloth-esque wrap I’d bought and was satisfied with how it functioned as a wrap in general.

Longmont Newborn Photographer

For this shot for my daughter, I used a similar stretchy blue wrap but positioned it so that her arms and legs were mostly free. I nestled her in a donut pillow underneath a simple knit blanket. It kind of reminded me of a nest. The donut pillow helped the wrap position her limbs so that I could capture her in that cozy, dreamy moment.

For this little love bug, I wrapped her in a flannel blanket and then wrapped her with a purple stretchy wrap. It gave her more volume and would probably work well for those shots when you prop up the baby. This time, I concentrated on leaving her hands free and loved how she positioned them as she slept.

And finally, for this on with my daughter, I used a scarf as a wrap because I loved the color. Newborn wraps are kind of scarf-shaped, actually, so it was an easy transition to make. I did a twisted wrap technique to add a bit more texture to the picture as well. Same donut pillow as the blue wrap picture I took of her earlier in the week.

All-in-all, I’ve learned and improved quite a bit since I started! Always working on becoming the best Longmont newborn photographer I can be!

The Pumpkin Baby

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Family Photographer

When my son was six months old, he experienced his first Halloween! My brother talked me into commemorating the occasion with a pumpkin baby photo shoot. He wanted me to carve a pumpkin to put my son into…kind of like a pumpkin diaper. I mindlessly scrolled through the internet for ages trying to decide how to pull it off.

My husband and I decided to pick up a large pumpkin at Chatfield Farms, a botanic garden with a seasonal pumpkin patch about a half hour southwest of Denver. We’d previously taken a goofy picture there announcing our pregnancy with our son. It seemed fitting to return and take a picture of our pumpkin alongside some actual pumpkins.

Longmont Family Photographer
Drooling over his pumpkin baby diaper! Haha!

We chose a nice huge, round pumpkin and brought it home. I carved it up, lined in with blankets, and took it outside to take one of my favorite pictures of my pumpkin baby son. He was teething pretty hard at the time and drooling all over the place but I managed to capture a goofy look that was so emblematic of his personality.

But my daughter was a newborn at Halloween. I wanted to take some pictures of her to celebrate the season, too, but knew that a giant pumpkin diaper was absolutely out of the question. Instead, I carved the pumpkin just by removing the top and the guts inside. I stuffed blankets and a fluffy teal rug in the pumpkin, setting it in the middle of a lovely, assorted pumpkin, gourd, and dried corn spread, creating a makeshift studio in my living room.

Here’s what I captured.

Getting Trendy: Poofy Newborn Skirts

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Newborn Photographer

As a Longmont family and newborn photographer, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t excited to take some choice pictures with my newborn baby girl. One of the pictures I’d always, always wanted to take was the kind with those big, poofy tulle skirts that absolutely dwarf the baby with their overall size and general ridiculousness. A flower crown or a tiara might help complete the look.

I spent hours on the internet, scrolling through miles of Etsy, Amazon, and Pinterest listings looking at posing, outfits, and anything I could need to create the perfect newborn shoot. I ended up purchasing a sweet dusty rose skirt that the reviews said was so soft, with an oversized, satin ribbon bow on the back and a matching faux flower headband. I ordered a rhinestone crown to be able to change up the look just a little bit as I moved through the shoot.

But, as life often does, all my careful planning went out the window when my daughter was actually born. She had a severe ABO jaundice, was airlifted from Longmont to Children’s hospital in Denver, and spent a week in 2 different NICU’s before finally coming home. I was terrified and exhausted in a way that surpassed anything I experienced with my son. He’d also had ABO jaundice, but his took only a day to treat.

Once she was home in Longmont, I didn’t want to take pictures. I wanted to snuggle her, breastfeed her on demand, things I wasn’t able to do for a week while she lounged under those electric blue lights, waiting for her blood to clear. The idea of putting her down long enough to get those dreamy, sleepy, wonderful newborn shots was inconceivable.

So, after a few days holed up at home, her grandparents and father taking exquisite care of us, I was finally ready to get started.

This is my favorite shot from our newborn photography shoot.

Her skin is so, so much clearer, a lovely normal pink instead of pumpkin orange. She’s sleepy, but not lethargic like she was as the jaundice raged inside her. I was finally able to appreciate her details for their beauty, instead of hyper-focusing on them in an attempt to memorize them before the nurses took her from my arms again.

The Newborn Photographer has a Baby!

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Newborn Photographer

Your favorite Longmont newborn photographer welcomed a baby girl this past fall! It was a very traumatic birth, characterized by not one but THREE epidural attempts before finally getting it right. So much fun. But once everything was settled, sweet girl made her appearance in less than two hours and only 12 pushes!

A few complications and a stay in Children’s Hospital later (yay ABO jaundice!), we made it home. Learning our new roles as a family of four was challenging and so, so wonderful all at once.

Of course, we wouldn’t have been able to pull it off at all without my parents stepping in to do all the things that make a household run. To thank them, even though it wasn’t nearly enough, I took some family pictures and treated them to dinner.

After I took pictures of them with my babies, I set up my camera with my preferred settings and coached my father to use it. As a Longmont newborn photographer, I definitely have my favorite settings memorized depending on the location and lighting! All he needed to do was point the camera at me, poke the LCD screen on the back of the camera to focus and press the button. Simple enough, right?

The Sentimental Newborn Photographer – Using Heirlooms

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Newborn and Family Photographer

I am an extremely sentimental person. Working as a Longmont newborn photographer has done nothing to change that, I’ve just become a sentimental newborn photographer! Haha!

When I prepared my newborn photography clients, I often give these three tips:

  1. Keep your house around 80 degrees. Newborn photography sessions are often done with minimal clothing to capture those sweet newborn details. A warm house will keep baby comfortable as we work through the session.
  2. Always, always, if you have some, selected a few momentos, heirlooms, or special outfits for the session. This session illustrates why so perfectly.
  3. Remember to relax. These sessions take a while and that’s okay! Newborns are so sweetly sensitive to changes in their environment. Babies can tell that I’m a new presence and will stay awake to check me out. But I’m here to work with them, not against them, so I’m more than happy to let them do what they need to do. Nurse, take a bottle, rock a little in their parents’ arms, whatever they need! I can wait and you’ll be glad we did!

For this adorable little boy, dad had several koala bears picked out and set up on a table in the living room. He explained which ones were his when he was growing up and which one had traveled the world as it was passed down through his family over the past century, before making it to Longmont, Colorado. How special it was to share those memories with his son!

Because the koalas were shades of gray and tan—neutral tones—I pulled a knit crown from my outfit collection to take a few precious pictures of this darling newborn boy sleeping in a basket.

I often like to add a few black and white detail shots to my albums for my Longmont newborn photography clients as well. This tiny baby feet shot with his parents hands cradling him was just perfect in this monotone selection.

All in all, another great Longmont newborn photography session in the books! This sentimental newborn photographer couldn’t have been more pleased with the results.

Capturing the Older Baby

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Newborn Photographer

When booking a newborn photography client as a Longmont newborn and family photographer, I usually recommend that parents schedule their sessions between 4-12 days after birth to capture that all too fleeting newborn look. Truthfully, I can work with babies of any age, but this is a great window to start with! However, I adored the challenge or working with an older baby in this newborn photography session! He was about five weeks old and his parents were so kind and welcoming. I knew we would create beautiful art together as I photographed their sweet family.

Working in the living room this time, I set up a simple set that reflected what I observed in the home. Mom and dad seemed to enjoy spending time outside (and who wouldn’t? Longmont, Colorado, and neighboring areas are just so gorgeous!) so we selected an adorable knit fisherman outfit out for their son to wear.

Older babies are often harder to keep asleep during their newborn photography sessions. They’re developmentally more interested in their environments now and staying awake to see what’s happening! But, with a cozy warm house and being wrapped up, this Longmont baby was more than happy to oblige me with some dreamy, sleepy poses.

My favorite shots from this session are by far the simplest. Laying this newborn boy against my gray posing cushion and wrapping him in a white cloth, I was able to capture his details without any distracting elements. When he began to wake, I switched to let mom and dad hold him. I loved watching their connection as they held and interacted with their son and with each other. It was so beautiful and reminded me why I do what I do as a Longmont newborn and family photographer.

Meeting the Perfect Baby – Longmont, CO

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Newborn and Family Photographer

When I prepare my Longmont newborn photography clients, I give them a few pieces of advice to make their session an absolute success. These are my top three little tidbits:

  1. Keep your house warm. At the time of this session, we were riding out a heat wave. Easy peasy.
  2. Pick out a few momentos, heirlooms, or special outfits for the session. Your newborn photos will be so much more meaningful than they already are if they have that little something extra.
  3. Relax. These sessions take a while. Newborns are so sweetly sensitive to changes in their environment. I’m an invader and babies usually intuit that I’m a new presence. I’m here to work around their schedule, whether they need to eat, get a new diaper, or get rocked to sleep again and again. I have all the time to wait and I’m more than happy to do so!

So, once everyone is prepared, I show up and get to work. This little lady was one of the most cooperative newborns I’ve ever photographed. While mom nursed her when I arrived, her big brother showed me his room. I was instantly charmed and fell a little in love with him on the spot. Leading him back to his parents, I asked him to pick out a headband for his sister wear during the shoot. I also let him pick out the color wrap she would be swaddled in. Once we settled on an oversized white flower and a dusty purple wrap, I started with the lifestyle poses, then moved on to the posed newborn photography shots. This lovely newborn girl was so cooperative and I was able to get some very, very sweet shots with her.

My First Newborn Photography Shoot – Longmont, CO

By Kat Knuth, Longmont Newborn Photographer

As a new Longmont newborn photographer, I needed models from Longmont to practice my newborn photography on. It’s rare, but I put out a model call on social media to get a couple families to model for me. In exchange for their time, I gave them a couple 11×14 mounted art prints from the session.

My first volunteer was this lovely family.

A Sweet Candid – Longmont, CO

When I entered their home, I was so nervous. I haven’t been in Longmont very long and don’t have a reading of the people from this area. But when Jon opened the door and welcomed me inside, I knew I had nothing to worry about.

I set up my newborn photography posing cushion and basket while chatting with Heather and Jon. Their newborn son was wrapped in a light blanket to treat his jaundice. My son had it too, but we stayed in the hospital to have his treated. Maybe it was a symptom of the pandemic to send newborns home to be treated? I was about 5, almost 6 months pregnant at the time, and knew my daughter would likely face jaundice too. How wonderful it would be to spend that time at home with her in Longmont as she worked through it!

As I was warned by my newborn photography mentor, this session took a couple hours to complete. Sweet boy was taking his time, nursing and sleeping. We took several pictures in the basket (his favorite place for the session, where after a few minutes examining his fingers, he drifted off the sleep).

Moving onto some lifestyle shots, we moved into the master bedroom. I loved the chaos of bedding, bassinet, diapers, and toys in various spots throughout the room. I gathered the family on the bed and watched them interact with each other.

As the newborn photography session wound down, we took a few of my favorite pictures with Heather and Jon holding their newborn in a cute knit sweater and matching pants. I love the details in his little feet next to dad’s wedding band. Those are my favorite kind of details to immortalize.

As I left, I called my newborn photography mentor to share just how excited I was with my work and meeting Heather and Jon. I knew I was working toward something fabulous in Longmont, Colorado, as a newborn photographer.

My “Why”

By Kat Knuth

Longmont Family Photographer

I was recently asked by my photography mentor about my “why.” Why am I a photographer? Why did I want to become a photographer?

Why?

I’ve been thinking about how to answer ever since. I could spew some noncommittal nonsense about always loving taking pictures or getting into travel photography while in graduate school. While neither statement is a lie, they don’t get to the heart of the question. They just poke the surface.

So how to answer?

When I was little, looking through pictures was my favorite thing to do. My family moved around a lot and often pictures were how I learned the faces of my relatives. In fact, because my father was deployed when I was a baby, it was how I learned who he was. Every night, my mother and I would say goodnight to his portrait on the wall. When he returned, I was a little over a year old and very much a momma’s girl. I cried when he tried to hold me and clung to my mother’s neck. She pointed to the portrait and back at my father, trying to get me to connect the two. I followed her finger but still wouldn’t go near him. The legend ends when my dad fell asleep on the couch that night and I wandered over to give him a kiss on the cheek.

Longmont Portrait Photographer

Every night, my mother and I would say goodnight to his portrait on the wall.

As I grew older and made friends, pictures were how I remembered what I left behind. My grandmother gave me an antique disk camera when I was around 7 years old that I took everywhere with me. I took pictures of my friends, the world as I saw it, everything. It felt like, packing for a move in a way. Organizing memories into little squares that can be easily transported from one place to another.

I appreciate this need to document my experiences most when I have to reach through my archives to find something. Recently, a friend of mine passed. It was a total shock, as young people’s deaths often are. I immediately went through my digital photos, looking for his face. I needed to see him as I remembered him. I found pictures I’d forgotten taking–smiling, partying, laughing. I sent several to his other friends, eager to share what pieces I’d kept of him with them. In the lead up to his funeral, we all posted some of those pictures on social media, remembering what his friendship meant to us. I wished I’d taken more pictures, kept more of him around, but was so grateful for what I did have.

I guess, to pull all these strings of thought together, photography to me is the ability to share what I experience, however limited in view, with the people I love. Becoming a photographer is how I help others achieve the same. Becoming a photographer in Longmont, Colorado, is just the cherry on top. Who wouldn’t want to take pictures of such lovely people in such a gorgeous state?

To me, you never regret the pictures you take, no matter how good, bad, embarrassing, or ridiculous. But when your memory fades and the people in your photos begin to disappear, that’s when you regret not capturing more moments. As a Longmont family photographer, photography is how I turn irreplaceable memories into art that lasts.

Learning how to Shoot in Manual Mode

By Kat Knuth

Longmont Family Photographer

Like many professional photographers, I’ve been obsessed with taking pictures for a long time, long before becoming a Longmont family photographer. I’ve always been the girl with a camera, capturing everything from party pictures that should have never been taken (sorry college friends) to gorgeous travel scenes I hope I never forget. Along the way, I developed an eye for a good shot, something that only comes with practice.

So, when my husband decided to invest in a Canon DSLR before our honeymoon, I was ecstatic. Finally! I’d have a camera that matched my growing photography skillset! Professional photographer here I come!

In auto mode, I was fantastic but my shots were still only good 50-70% of the time. What gives? Surely the fancy new camera would just…make me a good photographer? That’s all it takes, right?

Not even close.

When my son came along, like many new parents/millennials, I became obsessed with documenting every milestone. I set up elaborate sets in my apartment living room, photographing everything and learning more and more each time. I learned how to light a set indoors, how to adjust my settings to help, how to edit shadows in photoshop if I missed something, etc.

But when something wasn’t working, or my kiddo wasn’t cooperating, I’d abandon what I was learning and switch right back to auto mode.

I’d abandon what I was learning and switch right back to auto mode.

It wasn’t until I became brave enough to post my first model call and begin pursuing photography in Longmont, Colorado, professionally that I really started to understand my camera and how it worked. I was preparing for my first set of models and I took my little family out to Barefoot Lakes in Firestone, Colorado. During the ever so perfect golden hour, I took some of my favorite images I’ve ever shot. Completely in manual mode to make sure I captured all that beautiful golden light, I followed my son around as he explored wildflowers and enjoyed the evening glow.

What I’d photographed…was so lovely, so natural, it didn’t need to be over processed and over produced. It just needed to exist as I shot it.

For the first time when I went back to edit my photos that night, I didn’t overedit. I didn’t have to. What I’d photographed in Firestone, Colorado, was so lovely, so natural, it didn’t need to be over processed and over produced. It just needed to exist as I shot it.

That’s how I prefer to shoot now. I nudge my camera along with the manual settings, usually focusing on aperture, to get the shot I want the first time, before photoshop takes over and I process the images to give them that sweet airbrushed touch. This results in much more natural, true-to-life images that have come to define my style.

So, I’m starting a photography blog

By Kat Knuth
Longmont Family Photographer

Hi! Thank you for stumbling onto my photography blog! I am, as you may have guessed, a photographer in Longmont, Colorado. Since this is my very first of what I hope to be many posts, I thought I’d introduce myself a bit.

I am a 33-year-old, married mom of a beautiful little boy (with a baby girl due this fall!), who isn’t from Longmont. I’m not really from anywhere, to be honest. I moved a lot as a child and when I have to fill out one of those residential history things for background searches, I have to include 27 addresses. Or is it 28 now? Anyway, not the point. Moving around gave me a real appreciation for meeting new people and experiencing different cultures. I’ve loved what I’ve been able to see and do over the course of my life so far.

And I’ve taken pictures of everything!

(Laguna Amarga, Patagonia, Chile. View of Torres Del Paine in the background!)

It was this need to document where I’ve been that led me toward photography in the first place. Travel photography would be the ultimate dream job, but having a young family does tend to make that a little difficult. I know I’ll shared the joy of traveling with them when they’re older but, for now, I’ve meticulously organized my experiences into photo albums and adore the memories they rekindle every time I open one up. It’s actually kind of scary just how organized it all is, though.

Now, I spend most of my time documenting my son’s life. Cheesy, right? I’m just like any other millennial mom in that way. Except, I try my best to remember to use my camera instead of my phone when I’m taking his photograph. When the pandemic hit, this became my way to share how much he was growing with friends and family. Monthly milestone pictures, walking around Longmont (we moved here last June, when everything was still very uncertain), and just playing in the yard all became opportunities to get out my camera and photograph the moment.

Last fall, I decided to be brave and put myself and my photography out there. I set up a few social media accounts, started following local photographers, and began practicing on friends and family as restrictions eased (and outside locations were available!). I seemed to have stumbled on something that worked for me and my growing family. A lifelong artist and writer, photographer fit right alongside my existing passions and creative outlets. Suddenly, this wasn’t just something I did to keep my memories in meticulous order—this was my art.

I’m still learning. That’s why I started this blog. I have so much to learn and do in order to grow as (hopefully) Longmont’s best family and newborn photographer.

Thanks for coming along with me as I figure this out!
